Govt rules out privatisation of BSNL, MTNL

The Government admited that BSNL and MTNL were not in the pink of health.

The Government today ruled out privatisation of BSNL and MTNL even as it admited that he two State-run
telecom service providers were not in the pink of health.
Responding to a supplementary during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad
said the Government’s intention was to bring them back to profitabilty.
“The financial health of MTNL and BSNL is not in god shape. There are several reasons for this which I want to
discus in the House in greater detail one day. However, we wil make them healthy,” he said.
Prasad also said the two erstwhile profit-making entities have ben incuring loses for some years and one of the
reasons for their downfal could be traced to the way these were “forced to function in those days”.
“We ned to improve the health of these two companies. There is no atempt to privatise them,” he said, adding that
25,000 mobile towers are being instaled by BSNL and MTNL to improve their services.
To another question, Prasad said the telecom subscriber base in the country is set to touch the one bilion mark son
from 97.9 crore as of December-end.
Regarding mobile tarif, he said service providers have the flexibility to ofer diferent tarif schemes depending on
market conditions and other commercial considerations.
“The rates charged by mobile service providers for various types of cals difer from service area to service area. The
rates ofered by the same operator in a service area could also be diferent depending on the tarif plan subscribed by
each individual consumer,” he said.
